India's 200m-strong middle class is the most economically dynamic group on the planet, but is largely uninterested in politics or social reform. Until it begins to engage politically, India will suffer from a lop-sided modernization.
Prof. Chakravarthi Ram-Prasad
The Indian Middle Class is the fastest growing middle class in the world. With a total population of 1.1 billion, India is the second most populous country in the world. Middle class in India is approximately between 24-27 % of the total Indian population.
However, on an average only 30-35% educated middle class Indians vote in the elections. This aversion or apathy of the Indian middle class towards the fundamental right of participating in the voting process is a major stumbling block towards making India a great democracy with accountable political leadership. |
